Summer SchoolThe 2008 Summer School took place over the week of 18th - 22nd August at Lionwood First School, Performing Arts Space in Norwich. The theme for the Summer School was Africa. We explored African culture and compared the way of life to our own. We talked about the problems that some African countries and African people face in their lives; dirty drinking water, disease, drought and famine. We learnt about farming and crop growing in Africa and how important it is to grow enough food to feed people and keep them alive when there is a drought. We enjoyed a visit from Anna Mudeka who told us how important the harvest is in Zimbabwe, where she was born. Anna sang songs to us in a different language, taught us some drumming rhythms and a dance of celebration. We also produced artwork for masks and tapestries based on traditional African art. The Summer School culminated in a performance piece entitled 'The Spirit of Africa' which used some ideas from Anna's workshop and the rest from our own research and discussion. The Summer School was a week of inspirational learning, fun and laughter!
